FAQs

What makes Step by Step Counselling Training different from other counselling providers?

We are relational, experiential and human. Learning happens through discussion, skills practice, reflection and real connection. There is no passive listening and no death by PowerPoint. Our training is grounded in ethics, depth and professional identity, not just ticking qualification boxes.

Are your qualifications recognised?

Yes. Our Level 3 is an NCPS quality checked course and the Level 4 Diploma is an SEG programme. The Level 4 Diploma enables graduates to practise as qualified counsellors, subject to professional membership requirements.

Where are you based?

We are based in Newton Abbot, Devon. Our training is delivered in person, with selected CPD opportunities offered both in person and online. Download directions and parking spaces.

What is the teaching style like?

Expect discussion, live skills work, personal development, reflective exercises and structured feedback. We balance professional rigour with warmth and humanity.

What support do students receive?

Students receive ongoing tutor support, structured feedback on skills and written work, and clear guidance throughout placements and professional development.

No prior counselling qualification is required. Level 3 is designed as a structured and supported entry point into counselling training.

Do I need prior experience to join Level 3?

Do I need to be in personal therapy?

Personal therapy is required during Level 4 training, in line with professional standards. We will guide you through what is expected and why it matters.

How much written work is involved?

There are written assignments and reflective pieces at both levels. We support students with structure, expectations and marking guidance so the academic side feels manageable and meaningful.

How many students are in each group?

We intentionally keep groups small (13 students max) This allows for meaningful skills practice, safety and individual attention.

What CPD courses do you offer?

We offer specialist CPD for qualified counsellors in several areas. These are delivered in small, engaged groups with an emphasis on practical application.

Can I practise as a counsellor after Level 3?

No. Level 3 is a preparatory qualification. It builds self-awareness, skills and foundational knowledge. To practise professionally as a counsellor, you must complete a Level 4 Diploma.

What kind of people train with you?

People from diverse professional backgrounds including education, healthcare, support work, leadership, coaching and career changers. What they share is curiosity, emotional maturity and a desire to work ethically and deeply.

Which route is right for me?

If you are fairly new to counselling or have some basic experience in a caring or talking support role or would like to change caareers, then the Advanced Certificate (Level 3 Equivalent) may be your focus. If you have completed and passed The Advanced Certificate, you can study the Level 4 Diploma. We are always happy to have a chat with you about your experience and answer any questions you may have. If you are qualified to level 4 standard, our CPD programme is there for you to deepen your practice.

Is the training suitable if I work full time?

Yes. Many of our students balance training alongside work or family life. We are realistic about the commitment involved and help students plan accordingly.

Do you provide payment plans?

Yes we are an accessible training provider. Ask us for more details.

How do I apply?

Applications involve an initial application form, followed by a review process. We are looking for readiness, capacity for reflection and relational awareness rather than perfection.
