Thinking About Counselling? Here’s Where Most People Start
We often speak to people who are thinking about counselling, but not quite sure what that means yet.
There’s usually something behind it.
Sometimes it’s their own experience of therapy.
Sometimes it’s that people naturally open up to them.
Sometimes it’s just a quiet sense of “I think I might be good at this….but I don’t really know where to begin.”
And that’s completely normal.
Most people don’t start with a clear plan. They start with curiosity.
So What Is a Foundation Certificate in Counselling?
In simple terms, this is your starting point.
A Foundation Certificate in Counselling (Level 2 Equivalent)isn’t about jumping straight into a new career. It’s about trying it on and seeing how it fits.
It gives you a feel for what counselling actually involves, rather than what you might imagine it to be.
We begin with the basics, things like:
How to really listen without interrupting, advising or fixing
Understanding some of the core ideas behind counselling
Boundaries, ethics and what safe practice looks like
Beginning to develop your own self-awareness
And that last one tends to be the bit that surprises people the most.
You Don’t Need to Be “Ready”
This comes up a lot.
People often think they need to have made a decision before they start.
That they should already know they want to become a counsellor.
You don’t.
This level is about exploring, not committing.
You can come in unsure, curious, even a bit hesitant. That’s often the best place to begin from, because you’re open.
It’s Quite Different From What People Expect
A lot of people imagine sitting in a classroom, taking notes.
There is some theory, of course, but that’s not the heart of it. The course is quite experiential, which means you learn by actually doing. You’ll take part in exercises, work in pairs or small groups, and start to notice how you respond to others. You’ll also notice your own patterns a bit more clearly.
That might sound a little exposing, and we’re always mindful of that when people first join. But it’s paced carefully, and it’s supported, so you’re not thrown in at the deep end.
In fact, most people end up saying this is the part they value most.
Who Comes Onto a Course Like This?
Honestly, all sorts of people.
Some are considering a career change but aren’t ready to commit.
Some work in roles where they support others and want to feel more confident doing that and some people are returning to learning after a long time away.
And often there are those who are just drawn to it and want to understand themselves a bit better.
There isn’t a “type”. What they tend to have in common is that sense of curiosity.
Where It Can Lead (If You Want It To)
For some people, this course is enough in itself.
For others, it opens a door.
If you decide you want to continue, the next steps are usually:
Then the Level 4 Diploma, which is where you train to practise as a counsellor
But there’s no pressure to go further.
One of the most important parts of this stage is giving yourself the space to decide.
How We Approach the Training
This bit matters.
There are a lot of courses out there, and they can feel quite different from each other.
At Step by Step Counselling Training, we keep things grounded and relational.
That means:
Small groups, so you’re not just another face in the room
A strong focus on experience, not just theory
A supportive environment where you can develop at your own pace
It’s not about getting things perfect.
It’s about building confidence, awareness and skill over time.
If Something in You Is Curious….
You don’t need a big reason to start.
You don’t need to have your future mapped out.
If there’s just something in you that’s a bit curious about counselling, that’s enough.
That’s usually where it begins.
Have a Look, or Have a Chat
If you want to explore it a bit more, you can take a look at the course here:

A short, informal chat is often the easiest way to get a feel for whether this is right for you.
