What Happens During an Advanced Certificate in Counselling (Level 3 Equivalent)?
If you’re thinking about counselling training, there’s often a quiet moment before you start where you wonder:
Am I overthinking this….or is this actually something I could do?
Level 3 tends to sit right in the middle of that question.
It’s not the very beginning, but it’s not full clinical training either. It’s more like stepping through the door and getting a proper feel for what counselling really is… beyond the idea of it.
It’s Not What Most People Expect
A lot of people arrive expecting something quite academic.
Or slightly intimidating.
Or full of people who seem like they’ve already “got it”.
And then something slightly surprising happens.
It feels….human.
You’re not sitting there being filled with information all day. You’re in conversations, small groups, shared reflections. You’re noticing how people think, how they listen, how they respond.
And you start noticing yourself in that too.
Not in a heavy or exposing way. More in a “that’s interesting, I didn’t realise I do that” kind of way.
You Start Listening Differently
One of the earliest shifts people notice is in how they listen.
Not just in the classroom, but outside of it as well.
You might find yourself:
Pausing a bit more before responding
Picking up on things you’d usually miss
Becoming aware of how quickly we tend to jump in or fix
Letting conversations breathe a little more
It’s subtle at first, but it changes how interactions feel.
And for a lot of people, that’s when something clicks.
There’s Theory….But It Doesn’t Sit in a Textbook
Yes, you learn theory.
You’ll explore different ways of understanding people, relationships, and behaviour. You’ll look at things like boundaries, ethics, and what it actually means to hold a safe space for someone.
But in a good training environment, it doesn’t stay abstract.
It shows up in the room.
You’ll hear it in how someone responds.
You’ll feel it in the difference between being listened to, and being really listened to.
And that’s when it starts to land.
Confidence Builds Quietly
People often expect a big moment where they suddenly feel confident.
It’s rarely like that.
What tends to happen instead is much quieter.
You try something.
You reflect on it.
You try again.
You notice what felt natural.
You notice what didn’t.
And over time, without really realising it, you become more comfortable sitting with someone, staying present, not rushing to fill the space.
It’s not about getting it right. It’s about getting used to being in it.
The Group Becomes Part of the Experience
This is something people often underestimate.
You’re not just learning counselling. You’re learning alongside other people who are also figuring it out.
Different ages, different backgrounds, different reasons for being there.
And that mix matters.
You learn from each other.
You see different ways of being.
You realise there isn’t one “type” of person who becomes a counsellor.
That sense of shared experience can be surprisingly grounding.
It’s Also a Bit of a Mirror
Without it being therapy, the course does have a way of gently reflecting things back to you.
How you communicate.
How you respond to certain situations.
Where you feel at ease, and where you don’t.
Nothing is forced. Nothing is pushed.
But awareness grows.
And that awareness is part of what makes counselling training different from most other courses.
So….Is It the Right Time?
That’s usually the real question underneath all of this.
Not “what will I learn?”
But “is this the right step for me?”
If you’re curious about people, drawn to understanding behaviour, or wondering whether counselling could be part of your future… Level 3 is often the place to explore that properly.
You don’t need to be certain.
You don’t need to feel confident.
You just need to be open enough to step in and see what happens.
Take the Next Step
If you’re at that “maybe….maybe not” stage, the next step doesn’t have to be a big one.
Have a look through the course, get a feel for how we work, and see if it resonates.
At Step by Step Counselling Training, we keep things grounded, supportive and real. You won’t be expected to have all the answers. You’ll be encouraged to learn, try things out, and find your own way into the work.
If that sounds like your kind of starting point, we’d love to hear from you.
